STAT+: A family’s giving to the Broad Institute’s research tops $1 billion
The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is poised to receive a massive injection of cash to fund breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia research.
The Stanley Family Foundation’s $280 million gift brings the Stanley family’s total philanthropy to the Broad’s fight against these illnesses to more than $1 billion.
The donation represents a badly needed investment in mental health research, Broad leaders said, at a time when the federal funding landscape is on shaky ground. Last summer, the Broad laid off 75 employees, part of a belt-tightening across Massachusetts’ research institutions since President Trump took office and slashed research funding.
